About The Role
Uber is seeking a motivated and versatile Performance & Qualification Engineer to join our Fleet Engineering team in Sunnyvale, CA, or Mission Bay (San Francisco). This role operates at the intersection of hardware benchmarking, kernel diagnostics, and service observability, with exposure to next-generation infrastructure platforms like x86/ARM, ML and containerized cloud environments.
The ideal candidate has a passion for performance analysis, is skilled in system-level diagnostics, and is eager to grow into a broader performance engineering role spanning benchmarking, software tuning, and platform reliability.
---- What the Candidate Will Do ----
- Lead and support hardware and kernel qualification efforts, including hands-on benchmarking of new server platforms, collaborating with vendors and internal hardware teams.
- Analyze container workload performance using tools such as SpecINT, FIO, NetPerf, and STREAM, and deliver insights to guide hardware selection.
- Benchmark distributed applications (e.g., Cassandra, Redis, Docstore) and identify kernel-level bottlenecks across versions and configurations.
- Collaborate with kernel, storage, and Odin teams to debug regressions, reproduce production-like scenarios, and generate actionable reports.
- Drive observability improvements by contributing to tools like Ceilometer and maintaining Tableau dashboards to surface benchmarking trends and regression risks.
- Deploy and maintain containerized benchmarks and diagnostic services across multi-cluster environments, ensuring reproducibility and cross-platform compatibility.
- Contribute to Uber's qualification roadmap and partner with teams across Infra and NGFE to accelerate our modernization and performance optimization charter.
- Drive architectural and tooling decisions that influence how Uber builds, monitors, and scales its systems.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in performance benchmarking, system diagnostics, or infrastructure testing.
- Strong scripting or programming skills (e.g., Python, Bash, Go).
- Familiarity with Linux performance tools and techniques (e.g., perf, top, FIO, NetPerf).
- Experience benchmarking applications and systems across multiple hardware platforms.
- Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, or other container orchestration environments.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills with a focus on detail and follow-through.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience benchmarking ARM-based architectures or modern AMD platforms.
- Hands-on experience with kernel version testing, performance regression analysis, and system-level tuning.
- Familiarity with Tableau, Prometheus, or observability frameworks like Ceilometer.
- Exposure to databases, storage systems, or distributed caching performance evaluation.
Interest in growing into a full-stack performance engineer, including cloud cost optimization and service tuning.
