Role Overview
A large Hospital system is undergoing an enterprise‑wide migration from on‑prem VMware to AWS and is seeking a hands‑on Cloud Engineer to act as the right hand to the Cloud Architect during this transition. This role is heavily focused on executing and supporting AWS migrations, standing up and supporting cloud environments post‑migration, introducing automation and best practices, and helping enable the broader infrastructure team to successfully operate in AWS.
This is not a pure architecture role and not a generalist cloud position. The ideal candidate has real‑world experience migrating workloads into AWS and supporting those environments in production.
Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years total IT infrastructure experience
- 3–5+ years hands‑on AWS experience
- Direct experience migrating workloads from on‑prem (VMware) to AWS
- Strong understanding of AWS core services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, etc)
- Experience supporting AWS environments in production
- Scripting/automation experience (Python, PowerShell, or Bash) - open to reviewing similar tools
- Exposure to infrastructure automation (Terraform and/or CloudFormation) - open to reviewing similar tools
- Comfortable working cross‑functionally and communicating with technical and non‑technical stakeholders
Nice‑to‑Have
- Experience with AWS migration tools (AWS MGN preferred)
- Azure familiarity (secondary)
- Monitoring/logging experience in cloud environments
- Healthcare or regulated industry experience
- Prior experience acting as a technical lead or mentor (no direct reports required)
Key Responsibilities
- Support and execute VMware → AWS migrations, including pre‑migration prep, cutover support, and post‑migration validation
- Work closely with the Cloud Architect to build, configure, and support AWS environments
- Assist with selection and usage of migration tooling (e.g., AWS MGN or equivalent)
- Help establish repeatable AWS patterns for compute, networking, IAM, and monitoring
- Develop scripts and automation to support infrastructure provisioning and migration efforts
- Introduce and support Infrastructure‑as‑Code practices (Terraform and/or CloudFormation)
- Partner with infrastructure, networking, and PMO teams throughout the migration lifecycle
- Support production workloads post‑migration, including troubleshooting and optimization
- Mentor and enable internal IT teams on AWS operations, troubleshooting, and best practices
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization, including leadership, in a professional and clear manner
What Success Looks Like
- AWS environments are stable, secure, and supportable post‑migration
- Migration efforts progress smoothly with minimal operational disruption
- Infrastructure processes become more automated and repeatable
- Internal teams are increasingly confident supporting cloud workloads
- The engineer is trusted as a technical partner by leadership and peers
