Cloud Engineer
Location: Radnor, PA - On-site as needed
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 13 Months + Extension/potential conversion to FTE
Overview
A large healthcare system is in the early stages of a multi-year enterprise migration from on-prem VMware to AWS, and is looking to bring on a hands-on Cloud Engineer to support this transformation.
The organization recently went live with the initial AWS foundation and landing zones, with consulting partners supporting early setup and a Cloud Architect now in place to lead strategy. The next phase is execution—migrating workloads, building scalable AWS environments, and establishing best practices across the organization.
This role is highly visible and impactful. You will act as the right-hand to the Cloud Architect, helping drive migration execution while also guiding internal teams who are new to cloud and actively learning as they go.
What This Role Is (and Is Not)
- This is a hands-on engineering role, not pure architecture
- This is an individual contributor position, not a team-based delivery role
- This is not a general cloud support role—you will be expected to bring deep migration experience and technical leadership
You’ll be stepping into an environment where:
- Cloud is still maturing
- Standards are still being defined
- Internal teams will rely on you to help guide decisions and best practices
Key Responsibilities
- Execute and support VMware → AWS workload migrations, including:
- Pre-migration planning and prep
- Cutover support
- Post-migration validation and optimization
- Partner closely with the Cloud Architect to:
- Build and configure AWS environments
- Establish scalable cloud patterns and standards
- Contribute to early-stage cloud program development, including:
- Networking and security design in AWS (major focus)
- IAM, VPC architecture, and access models
- Introduce and scale Infrastructure as Code (Terraform strongly preferred)
- Develop automation using Python, PowerShell, or similar scripting tools
- Support AWS environments in production:
- Troubleshooting
- Performance tuning
- Stability improvements
- Help evaluate and utilize migration tooling (e.g., AWS MGN)
- Collaborate with infrastructure, networking, and PMO teams across the migration lifecycle
- Act as a technical SME and mentor, helping internal IT teams build AWS knowledge and capability
- Participate in periodic whiteboarding and solutioning sessions with leadership
Required Experience
- 8+ years in IT infrastructure engineering
- 3–5+ years of hands-on AWS experience in production environments
- Proven experience executing on-prem (VMware or similar) → AWS migrations
- Strong knowledge of AWS core services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, networking, security)
- Hands-on experience with Terraform (or similar IaC tools)
- Scripting experience (Python, PowerShell, Bash, or equivalent)
- Experience working in environments where you:
- Owned delivery
- Helped guide less cloud-experienced teams
- Strong communication skills across both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Nice to Have
- Experience with AWS MGN or similar migration tooling
- Exposure to Azure (secondary cloud awareness)
- Monitoring/logging experience in AWS environments
- Experience in healthcare or regulated industries
- Prior experience acting as a technical lead or mentor (without direct reports)
This role is not currently eligible for corp-to-corp hiring.
