Platform Engineer
Backend + Cloud · Platform Ownership & DevOps Lead
Role Overview
We are looking for a strong cloud and platform engineer who can own our systems end to end — from
backend application code through to the cloud infrastructure they run on. This is more than a build-and deploy role: we want someone who will formalize how we build and operate software, bring in
engineering practices and processes that scale, and help evolve the organisation's engineering maturity as we grow.
You will lead the DevOps effort working closely with the Engineering Manager, set the standard for how infrastructure, deployments, and operations are done, and be a credible voice for doing things better. We care less about which backend language you have used and more about whether you have genuine command of your craft and consistently get things done. We work in an AI-native way — you should already be leveraging coding agents and tools such as Claude to deliver faster, but also more structured and cleaner, and to plan and track work with clear visibility and estimation.
Who You Are
- You are comfortable straddling application code and infrastructure, and you take ownership of both.
- You are proactive, detail-oriented, and pragmatic — you get things done, and you make the team around you better by introducing structure and better processes.
- You can argue for a better approach and then deliver it.
- You think in terms of visibility and estimation, and you already use modern AI-assisted tooling to work faster without sacrificing quality.
- Above all, you want to help an organization grow its engineering as it scales.
What You'll Own
• End-to-end ownership of our backend services and the cloud platform they run on, with clear
standards for quality and operability.
• Process & structure: introduce and codify engineering practices — branching and release strategy,
testing standards, code review, environment management, deployment and rollback discipline,
incident process.
• Raising the bar: be the person who can vouch for better ways of doing things, justify them, and drive
adoption across the team rather than just executing tickets.
• Leading DevOps: own the DevOps roadmap alongside the Engineering Manager, translating
engineering needs into infrastructure and tooling investments.
• Evolving the org: partner with the EM and team to improve how the organization plans, estimates,
and ships — bringing visibility and predictability to delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Engineering
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services in a microservices architecture (our stack is Spring Boot / Java today; we value command of your language over the specific language).
• Build and maintain REST APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
• Work with relational and NoSQL databases, making sound data-modelling and performance
decisions.
• Write clean, maintainable, testable code and hold others to the same standard through review.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve backend issues across all environments.
• Collaborate with frontend, QA, product, and other engineering teams to deliver features.
DevOps, Cloud & Platform
• Own and evolve cloud infrastructure across AWS and Azure, including provisioning and configuration.
• Build, maintain, and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins today); push toward automated,
repeatable, low-friction delivery.
• Deploy and operate applications on Kubernetes clusters with Docker-based containerized workloads.
• Standardize environment management across development, staging, and production.
• Establish monitoring, logging, alerting, and SLOs for system health, performance, and availability.
• Lead incident resolution, root-cause analysis, and production support; turn incidents into process
improvements.
• Drive security and access-control practices across services and infrastructure (IAM, networking,
secrets, environment configuration).
Must-Have Skills & Experience
• 4+ years across backend development and DevOps / cloud infrastructure, including production
ownership.
• Deep command of at least one backend language and ecosystem (Java / Spring Boot, Python, or
equivalent) and a track record of shipping in a microservices architecture.
• Strong REST API design and backend integration experience.
• Hands-on with AWS and Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD (Jenkins or similar).
• Solid grasp of cloud deployment models, networking basics, security groups, IAM / access control,
and environment configuration.
• Git-based workflows, and excellent debugging and troubleshooting instincts.
• Demonstrated use of coding agents / AI tooling for faster, cleaner, well-structured delivery.
• Evidence of formalizing process or raising engineering standards on a team — not just executing
tasks.
