At Synexus, we're helping advertisers rethink how they show up in the news ecosystem. After a successful investment round, we are now in the process of launching a new brand and product to the Ad tech market.
Today, blunt keyword blocking causes brands to avoid entire news sites — even when the content is high-quality, balanced, and aligned with their values. It’s like tossing out a whole basket of fruit just because one apple has a bruise.
Our technology changes that. Instead of just scanning keywords, Synexus analyzes how topics are being discussed. This allows advertisers to safely reintroduce premium journalism into their media plans — driving better reach, performance, and efficiency without added risk.
We give brands smarter tools to control where their ads appear, unlocking underutilized, brand-safe inventory and improving campaign outcomes across the open web.
At Synexus, you’ll be surrounded by people who want to improve everything and support everyone around them. Our team is passionate about our mission, are experts in their fields and are collaborative problem solvers.
We model the following behaviors across the organisation:
- Bring positive energy
- Collaborate
- Focus on outcomes
- Respect
About The Role
Synexus is seeking a DevOps Engineer to join our team. We are looking for someone who is curious, proactive, pragmatic, and adaptable.
As our first DevOps Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the infrastructure and deployment culture of our growing engineering team. You’ll work closely with our small, but growing engineering and data science team to build scalable, reliable, and cost-effective systems that power our entire tech stack. You’ll have the opportunity to shape our DevOps practices from the ground up and drive key architectural improvements that support scale, speed, and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the transition to Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Migrate our manually configured services to Terraform or other IaC tools, ensuring consistency, version control, and repeatability across environments
- Modernize our data processing architecture: Partner with the engineering team to move from batch to real-time processing in a sustainable, cost-capped way—improving system responsiveness and reducing latency across data ingestion, transformation, and classification workflows
- Build and maintain container orchestration: Design and implement containerized infrastructure using Kubernetes, AWS Fargate, or similar solutions to support automated deployment, service discovery, and load balancing for our core systems
- Establish CI/CD pipelines and observability: Implement deployment automation, monitoring, alerting, and logging across services to support faster iteration, improved system reliability, and visibility into performance and issues
- Promote DevOps best practices: Set the standard for infrastructure scalability, security, and operational excellence. Establish tools and processes that help the team build, deploy, and maintain software efficiently
- Collaborate across the team: Work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and product stakeholders to ensure infrastructure choices align with evolving technical needs and business goals
Essential Experience And Behaviours
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in a DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or related infrastructure-focused role
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Pulumi
- Demonstrated experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, ECS/Fargate, RDS, ECR, IAM, ELB) or equivalent cloud platforms
- Experience setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins)
- Proficiency with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes
- Solid understanding of monitoring, alerting, and log aggregation tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK stack, Datadog)
- Familiarity with real-time processing architectures (e.g., Redis, Kafka, Kinesis, or similar stream processing tools)
- Excellent scripting skills in Python and Bash
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially in cross-functional and cross-discipline teams
- Professional fluency in English
Desirable Experience And Behaviours
- Experience and desire to work as part of a remote/virtual team
- Experience working in early-stage startups or on small, fast-moving engineering teams
- Familiarity with data pipelines, ML workflows, and web scraping/crawling systems
- Exposure to cost optimization strategies in cloud infrastructure
- Experience using project and task management tools for agile development
- Experience working with team members across countries and time zones
- Comfortable working in rapid response and being part of on-call rotations
What We Offer
- Competitive salary
- Health, dental, and vision benefits (US-based team only)
- Flexible working hours and remote options. Full-time, 1.0 FTE (37.5 per week)
- As a global organization, some flexibility for cross-time zone communication to be available for limited virtual meetings outside of office hours is required
- Professional development opportunities
