Job Overview
As Leap Orbit's first dedicated infrastructure hire, the Cloud Engineer designs, builds, and runs the Azure cloud stack behind our health IT applications, data analytics, and compliance-driven solutions. Your core mandate is to unblock development capacity—owning the environments, pipelines, and tooling that let our product teams ship faster. Guided by our mission, "We turn health data into public good," you'll treat infrastructure as a product: automating relentlessly and keeping our platforms secure, resilient, and fast.
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you'll partner with development engineers, product owners, and security staff to deliver on Leap Orbit's roadmap. We run an Azure tech stack built on Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD, and we're eager for engineers thinking forward about how AI can accelerate IaC, CI/CD, and security. The ideal candidate knows how to balance short-term issue resolution with the long-term viability and health of the platform—bringing us online and keeping us there—and has done so before in a healthcare-technology startup. Throughout, you'll apply DevOps and SRE best practices to protect Protected Health Information (PHI) and keep our systems highly available.
You'll also support broader Leap Orbit operations as needed, including occasional duties beyond this role and opportunities to attend conferences, trainings, and stakeholder meetings.
Essential Functions
1. As our first dedicated infrastructure role, own the environments, pipelines, and tooling that unblock development capacity and help product teams ship faster.
2. Design, deploy, and maintain services on our Azure tech stack; AWS or Google Cloud experience is welcome, but Azure receives strong preference.
3. Provide technical support for cloud-based systems, including incident response, problem resolution, and performance tuning.
4. Monitor system reliability, performance, and availability through logs and telemetry, responding to issues as warranted.
5. Lead the root cause analysis (RCA) process for incidents—driving investigation, documenting findings, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
6. Define, implement, and enforce security standards and best practices as required to protect PHI.
7. Collaborate with development teams to optimize applications for cloud deployment and employ DevOps practices such as CI/CD.
8. Explore and champion AI-driven approaches to Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, and security automation—prototyping, evaluating, and responsibly adopting tools that make our engineering faster and safer.
9. Participate in capacity planning and cost optimization efforts to maximize efficiency and reduce expenses.
10. Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends in cloud computing, platform engineering, DevOps, and SRE.
11. Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
12. Complies with company policies, procedures, and security regulations (including HIPAA safeguards as a Business Associate).
13. Attend routine team and status meetings.
14. Performs other related duties to support overall engineering and company operations.
Behavioral and Technical Competencies
1. Demonstrable experience with one or more configuration management tools such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or DSC.
2. Innate desire to automate routine tasks, functions, and processes using scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
3. Strong hands-on experience with Azure and Terraform as core technologies, with working knowledge of other Infrastructure as Code tools such as Bicep or CloudFormation.
4. Proficiency with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes is desired.
5. General knowledge of and experience with networking concepts, including DNS, SSL, VPNs, proxies, load balancing, and firewalls.
6. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with a focus on root cause analysis.
7. Time and priority management to ensure deliverables are completed within the given time frame.
8. Displays a growth mindset and diligent self-reliance, asking smart questions and applying creative problem solving.
9. Excellent communication and collaboration abilities to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
10. Deep understanding of cloud computing principles, database concepts, and operating systems (Linux and Windows).
Physical Demands
This is a sedentary role which may sit or use a computer for long periods of time. Finger dexterity needed for keyboarding. Extended periods of time reading/viewing computer screens.
Required Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
2. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in cloud engineering or related roles.
3. Proven track record of implementing scalable and resilient cloud solutions in production environments.
4. Certification in a cloud platform such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect.
5. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Education and Experience
1. Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
2. Azure certification (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert) is strongly preferred.
3. Experience working in Agile or DevOps environments.
4. Prior experience as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is a significant plus.
5. Prior experience supporting healthcare IT, interoperability, or compliance-driven (HIPAA/PHI) cloud environments, ideally within an early-stage or startup setting where you helped stand up and stabilize the platform.
6. Hands-on experience with FHIR-based or healthcare data platforms.
7. Demonstrated curiosity about applying AI to infrastructure, CI/CD, and security workflows.
