Senior Cloud Engineer (AWS/FinOps) | Location: Hybrid, Richmond, VA | Contract
We are seeking a highly technical Senior Cloud Engineer with deep expertise in AWS cloud infrastructure and FinOps principles. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable cloud solutions while optimizing costs and ensuring operational excellence across cloud environments. Key Responsibilities
- Designs, implements, and maintains scalable AWS cloud infrastructure and services.
- Develops and supports cloud automation tools, pipelines, and frameworks used across engineering teams.
- Creates and manages AWS cost reporting and analytics pipelines utilizing S3, Glue, and Athena.
- Builds and maintains CI/CD automation pipelines to streamline deployment and infrastructure management.
- Collaborates with engineering, finance, and product teams to support cloud cost allocation, reporting, and optimization initiatives.
- Implements and enforces AWS tagging strategies, governance policies, and automated remediation mechanisms.
- Develops automation scripts using Python, Bash, and AWS CLI to enhance operational efficiency and cost visibility.
- Maintains and optimizes existing AWS pipelines and infrastructure, supporting the development of new cloud solutions.
- Performs root cause analysis of system issues and implements proactive solutions to prevent recurrence.
- Evaluates and recommends new cloud technologies and tools to improve system performance and efficiency.
- Supports system monitoring, security compliance, and adherence to internal standards and operational guidelines.
- Leads complex technical initiatives and contributes to architectural decision-making for cloud-based solutions.
- Trains and mentors technical staff on cloud engineering tools, standards, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Strong expertise with Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud technologies.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining cloud infrastructure, tools, and automation pipelines.
- Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code, particularly Terraform.
- Knowledge of FinOps principles, including cloud cost visibility, optimization, and governance.
- Experience with AWS cost management tools: Cost Explorer, Budgets, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances.
- Experience implementing AWS tagging strategies, governance policies, and automated enforcement.
- Experience building and managing AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR) pipelines using S3, Glue, and Athena.
- Strong scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash, and AWS CLI.
- Experience with CI/CD automation and SDLC practices.
- Familiarity with security and compliance tools: AWS Config, GuardDuty, Inspector.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering and finance stakeholders.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience implementing automated tag enforcement using AWS Organizations Tag Policies, Config, or Lambda.
- Familiarity with automation tools such as Ansible.
- Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker.
- Experience with cloud financial management platforms such as Cloudability or similar tools.
- Experience designing cloud cost tracking and financial reporting strategies.
