About The Role
DevOps is a key position within the Technology, Infrastructure, and Operations group. You will be working with colleagues from Elsevier’s Technology organization. Working collaboratively, you’ll be delivering shared solutions for infrastructure operations across our products and service. To fill this role successfully, the candidate will need a background in cloud technologies, DevOps, and infrastructure automation, as well as experience with modern scripting and OO programming languages, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform and other technologies.
In addition to the technical skills required in this position, a well-developed sense for working with people is important. As the leader of a DevOps team, you’ll be working with a broad swathe of contributors across Elsevier’s Technology organization, as well as a number of key folks in our vendors’ services and technologies teams. You are a strong stakeholder manager and as a natural innovator, you’ll consistently look at ways to automate, optimize, increase availability, and migrate to cloud services. Importantly, we’re looking for someone eager to grow, a partner, and a teammate. A person that can talk the talk and walk the walk.
In this role you will get to hire and build a new DevOps team in Bengaluru to support multiple Elsevier products in different stages of their lifecycle and with software engineering partners all over the world. You will set out to build support capability excellence and a collaborative partnerships with other DevOps teams within the portfolio in Europe and the US on shared responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Hire and build a team by recruiting talented engineers and forming them into a high-performance team.
- Lead and manage a team. You demonstrate strong leadership qualities in your craft, in your collaboration with colleagues across a broad spectrum of roles, and in the development, care, coaching and mentorship of your team.
- You manage the people in your team(s), with a focus on their performance, personal development and career progression.
- Monitoring costs and compliance, assuring frugal service delivery in alignment with our procedures and standards as well as external certification and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate effectively within an agile team, and in close collaboration with Development and Product teams delivering continuous improvements in customer outcomes.
- Coordinate and drive alignment with other DevOps teams on the development, operation and reuse of shared solutions and responsibilities.
- Participating in the configuring, deploying, monitoring, and supporting the hosting of applications in AWS, ensuring the use of IaC best practices on our infrastructure assets.
- Ensure effective monitoring and automation supporting the effective management and consumption of cloud resources.
- Operate and maintain software systems across the full breadth of the SDLC and ensure optimal construction and implementation of CI/CD pipelines.
- Work with the Support and Development teams to ensure troubleshooting, diagnosis and rectification of hosting issues, and provide effective solutions through the applied integration of infrastructure, software, and software delivery best practices.
- Acting as an escalation point for internal and external customers to provide support for production issues.
- Mentoring junior team members to develop their skills.
Must Haves
- 7+ years of Cloud Engineering experience in an international, product-based organization.
- A BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent.
- Track record in building a new engineering team and taking them on a high-performance journey.
- Experience leading and managing an engineering team, with a proven track record in leading seasoned and developing junior engineers.
- Experience leading and managing people, with a proven track record in building high performance teams, growing individuals’ skills and advancing the careers of others.
- Experience with delivery and project management, workload estimation and roadmap planning.
- DevOps experience in large, multi-product environments, with production cloud hosting at scale, including budgeting.
- Experience provisioning, maintaining and administrating servers, systems and networks, including troubleshooting, incident management and performance optimization.
- Experience authoring CI/CD pipelines, automation elements related to infrastructure composition, deployment orchestration, and monitoring.
- A good understanding of working in an Agile environment and its working practices.
- A humble, authentic, and collaborative personality, self-starter attitude, ability to operate autonomously, bias for acting fast and pivoting when wrong, and a proven track record of empowerment to make the right decisions.
- A positive and constructive attitude and approach to cross-functional collaboration across the stack (frontend/backend and DevOps) and good execution.
- Awareness of longer-term impacts of architectural/deployment/automation choices.
- Comfortable presenting and communicating ideas to key stakeholders and engineers alike.
- Ability to convince people to follow your lead, and to give timely and constructive feedback.
- A habit of putting yourself in your customers’ shoes and holding yourself accountable to the right outcomes.
- Proficient command of the English language, both written and spoken.
Should Haves
- Solid understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices.
- Experience in AWS Architecture, ideally with an accreditation.
- Experience managing and running production workloads on Kubernetes.
- Experience using Terraform as an automation technology.
- Experience deploying configuration management via Ansible and Puppet.
- Experience with source code version control systems like GitHub or GitLab.
- Experience using modern scripting and OO programming languages as a contributing member within an agile squad.
- Experience of implementing infrastructure, service-based monitoring solutions and supporting Linux systems.
- Experience with GitHub Actions, Elasticsearch, New Relic, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Neo4J, Tomcat, Bash, Java, JavaScript, Python and Docker.
- A good understanding of the security controls required to host applications and services in the cloud.
A good understanding of release management techniques within a cloud hosted environment.
