We are looking for the right long-term fit. This position is initially structured as a 6-month contract engagement with the possibility of conversion to a full-time role based on performance and business need. The Senior Cloud Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for the design, reliability, and evolution of CloseKnit’s Azure cloud platform. Reporting to the VP of Systems Engineering, this role helps define cloud architecture standards, ensures the platform scales securely and reliably, and supports the organization’s healthcare compliance and availability requirements. This remote role shares cloud architecture decisions and ensures the platform scales securely while meeting healthcare reliability, availability, and compliance expectations. It requires deep expertise across cloud architecture, DevOps, and operations, and plays a key role in shaping cloud strategy aligned with business and clinical needs. The Senior Cloud Engineer collaborates closely with engineering, security, and leadership teams. They also mentor other engineers and drive continuous improvement across the cloud environment.
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Architecture & Infrastructure:
- Design, implement, and manage complex Azure cloud infrastructure, including networking, application hosting, integration patterns, data services, and secrets management.
- Define and maintain scalable, resilient, and secure cloud architectures aligned with best practices and organizational standards.
Infrastructure As Code & CI/CD
- Deploy and manage Azure infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Azure CLI, PowerShell), ensuring repeatability, security, and maintainability.
- Design and maintain GitHub Actions workflows to support CI/CD for both infrastructure and application deployments.
Reliability, Performance & Operations
- Optimize system performance, availability, and reliability through monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and incident response.
- Conduct regular system reviews and operational audits to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
- Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity strategies, including backup and restore processes.
Compliance & Security
- Partner with Security Analysts to implement and maintain security controls, access management, and policies aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure cloud environments align with security and compliance standards relevant to healthcare organizations, including HIPAA, data protection requirements, and industry best practices.
Automation & Platform Engineering
- Automate operational tasks and workflows using Azure Automation, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Azure Container Apps, Event Grid, or similar services.
- Develop and maintain services using Python, PowerShell, and Azure CLI, following clean code and cloud-native best practices.
AI Enablement & Innovation
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to enable and operationalize AI-driven capabilities on Azure, including platform readiness, scalability, observability, and cost management.
- Identify opportunities where AI services can add business or clinical value and help define success metrics.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide technical leadership through mentorship, design reviews, and architectural guidance.
- Communicate effectively with developers, operations, security, and leadership to translate business needs into technical solutions.
- Liaise with Microsoft and other vendors for support, escalation, and awareness of emerging capabilities.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain clear, accurate documentation of cloud architectures, configurations, and operational procedures.
- Stay current with Azure services, DevOps practices, and cloud engineering trends through continuous learning and experimentation.

Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 7+ years of experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure engineering
- 4+ years working with Microsoft Azure in production environments
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation (Terraform, ARM, Azure CLI).
- Solid understanding of cloud architecture patterns, microservices, and containerization.
- Experience with DevOps and SRE practices, including CI/CD, monitoring, and incident response.
- Proficiency in scripting or programming languages such as Python and PowerShell.
- Hands-on experience with GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, and Azure Resource Manager.
- Proven ability to design and operate highly reliable, secure, and scalable cloud platforms.
Interpersonal Skills
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience mentoring other engineers.
- Self-directed, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to resolving technical issues.
Preferred
- Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) or other Azure certifications
- Experience in a healthcare setting or with HIPAA-regulated environments.
