Our client is seeking a DevOps / Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate an enterprise-grade, immutable appliance for the Elevator Management System (EMS). EMS is deployed on PCs running Ubuntu and MicroK8s and may also be delivered as a virtual appliance. This role focuses on building repeatable, image-based platforms that are easy to deploy, patch, upgrade, and service in the field, while selectively applying modern cloud DevOps practices.
Responsibilities:
- Design and maintain an immutable appliance platform based on Ubuntu and MicroK8s for EMS.
- Build and maintain EMS as both a physical and virtual appliance where required.
- Own the full platform lifecycle: OS builds, Kubernetes deployment, application delivery, patching, upgrades, and rollback.
- Create repeatable, image-based system builds (gold images) for physical and virtual EMS deployments.
- Deploy, operate, and upgrade MicroK8s clusters on physical PCs, virtual machines, or small servers.
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for container images, Kubernetes manifests, and Helm charts.
- Automate provisioning, configuration, upgrades, and recovery using scripting and configuration management.
- Ensure systems are reliable and serviceable in field, on-prem, and low-connectivity environments.
- Monitor system and application health and continuously improve platform reliability.
- Collaborate closely with development, QA, product, and operations teams.
Required Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with Ubuntu Linux (18.04 / 20.04 / 22.04/24.04), MicroK8s or other self-managed Kubernetes clusters, Helm, and core Kubernetes concepts.
- Experience building immutable or image-based systems using tools such as Packer, custom ISO builds, virtual appliance images, or disk/image pipelines, with a strong focus on minimizing configuration drift.
- Experience owning OS-level build, system hardening, security patching, upgrades, and rollback strategies for long-lived systems.
- Experience supporting field-deployed, on-prem, or offline systems with emphasis on installability, recovery, and long-term support.
- Experience building, deploying, or operating systems on common hypervisors such as KVM, VMware, or Hyper-V, including packaging and maintaining virtual appliance images (OVA/OVF or equivalent).
- 5+ years of experience in DevOps or Platform Engineering roles with strong CI/CD skills, Docker, scripting (Python/Bash), observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK), and experience with at least one public cloud platform (Azure preferred).
- Self-starter who can independently drive work and take full ownership of outcomes.
- Curious and motivated to deeply understand systems end-to-end.
- Strong best-practices and quality mindset with focus on reliability, security, and maintainability.
- Consistently looks for better ways to simplify, automate, and improve how systems are built and operated.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Docker, Podman and Fedora Core based appliances a plus.
